MIDWEST CRAFTS COMMUNITY

MAY 2008

AHHHHH - finally, May has arrived - and you can be sure that with all the rain we have had in the Midwest during the months of March and April - flowers SHOULD be out in full-force!   Since May is upon us and life is bursting at the seams, I thought it would be more than a breath of fresh air to smell the flowers, feed the birds, and help out those worms in the garden! So let's start with smelling the flowers...and a lot of other things you can do with them. More articles concerning gardening, flowers, and herbal remedies can be found on our website at Midwest Crafts Network - and don't forget to go to the Midwest Crafts Community and sign up for your FREE website!  Drop us a line and let us know what's blooming in your neck of the woods.

Flowers - Or Are They?
So you have planted the customary tulips, daffodils, daylilies and roses... so what on earth are those YELLOW things popping up all over the place! Oh, of course, we all know that those pesky little perennials are the easily recognized little Dandelion. This little plant with the Old French name "Dent-de-lion" which means lion's tooth lives up to its nameDandelion since the long lance-shaped leaves are so deeply toothed resembling, you guessed it - a lion's tooth!

So there you are, in your gardener's armor, spade in hand, neckerchief around your forehead to catch the droplets of sweat that will surely follow and with a determination that would make a lion tamer take notice. You are ready to perform the age old spring task of digging up the dandes before they blow away - and we all know what that means! STOP! WAIT! LISTEN! Don't destroy this wonderful little miracle of mother nature - EAT IT! Yep, that's what I said......

Our Feathered Friends are Arriving!
Yep, you heard it right here from the MCC - our lavishly adorned favorites are flying in for the summer. I've already got several feeders up and I'm delighted to say that my buzzing little birds are back - not quite in full force yet, but they are arriving daily and it is such a joy to help them settle back in to Missouri.

Hummingbird RecipesThese beautiful little hummers are not only a very welcome addition but signal the arrival of summer is a coming! Most of us have at least one bird feeder hanging from our deck, and many of us station several around the yard so that these fierce little competitors don't dive-bomb each other so much. Although that is half the fun of watching them come in.

Our feathered friends, including the hummers, will also enjoy the flowers that you grace your grounds with, so make sure you plant plenty of their favorite treats - such as the Bubble Gum Mint (Agastache cana) - definitely one of their favorites, or the Sunset Hyssop, or the Columbine, and of course they enjoy the Butterfly Bush which attracts both hummers and butterflies! There are many other flowers and climbing vines that these little hummers enjoy, just do a google search and you'll find hundreds of sites devoted to these little helicopters.

No need to go out and buy the fancy nectar mixes, make your own with this simple recipe:

  • Use one part ordinary white sugar to four parts water.
  • No need to boil the water.
  • Fill the feeder!
  • Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Baking Soda is great to scrub your bath and kitchen.
