Aromatherapy and Essential Oils
Aromatherapy and Essential Oils - just what does that even mean? Well, aromatherapy ... is simple...it's simply therapy with aromas. It is also a form of what is called "alternative medicine" that uses the volatile liquid material of plants which is then known as essential oils - or EO's. It also includes other scented compounds from plants and they are used to help affect one's mood or health.
The distillation process differs a bit from herbal products
as it only accumulates the lighter phytomolecules. That's why
essential oils are so rich in VOC substances - monoterpenes and
sesquiterpenes (esters, aromatic compunds, non-terpene
hydrocarbones and some organic sulfides.)
There are many various traditions that make use of alternative
medical practices and many use essential oils. This is
what is usually called aromatherapy - even though its a very
generic term.
Aromatherapy springs from antiquity with its roots in aromatic oils. The word was coined, however, in the twentieth century by the French chemist Rene Maruice Gattefosse in the 1920's. Gattefosse had devoted his life to researching the the healling properties of essential oils. At an accident in his perfume laboratory, he burnt his hand and thrust it into the nearest cold liquid, which happened to be Lavender Oil. The recovery and healing process was amazing, the blisters, the inflammation, and scarring was surprising quick! The burn healed more quickly than usual, and with minimal discomfort and no scarring!
From this point on, the rapid use of reviving the ancient healing arts began in earnest, even though many commoners still practiced various forms of aromatherapy in their own way.
